Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup your favorite BBQ sauce
  • 4 brioche buns
  • 4 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • Fresh lettuce leaves
  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Use your hands to gently mix the seasonings into the meat. Be careful not to overwork the beef, as this can lead to a tough burger. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties about 3/4-inch thick.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the maple syrup and the BBQ sauce until the mixture is smooth and well-combined. Set aside about one-third of the mixture in a separate small dish to use as a fresh topping later, and keep the rest for glazing the burgers while they are on the grill.
  3. Preheat your grill or a heavy cast-iron skillet to medium-high heat. Place the patties on the hot surface. Cook for about 4 to 5 minutes on the first side. This allows a nice crust to form before you flip them.
  4. Flip the burgers. Immediately brush the cooked side generously with the maple-BBQ glaze. Cook for another 3 to 4 minutes. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty and close the grill lid (or cover the pan) to let the cheese melt into the sticky glaze.
  5. Briefly toast the brioche buns on the grill until they are golden brown. To assemble, place a lettuce leaf on the bottom bun, followed by the glazed patty, a tomato slice, and red onion. Drizzle the reserved glaze over the top and cap it with the top bun.
